Kim Yong Moon is a ceramic artist who makes Macsabal. He sometimes paints pictures in his Macsabal. This time, he painted on a canvas. The paintings drawn on a canvas are radically different because the canvas provides a flat surface that is different from the rigid, curved base of a Macsabal bowl. Although he paints on a canvas, the artwork is not independent from the art of ceramic making but can be considered as a formative development in relation to ceramics.

When the spinning wheel turns in circular motions, useful, rounded voids start emerging from the wet clay. However, the artist pauses from Macsabal making and turns to the canvas. Instead of the clay, he uses paint. Although the brush is used in general paintings, Kim Yong Moon touches and polishes the paint with his fingers and with small wooden tools.

The brush is the middle port that connects one’s body and the distant point of view. Through the brush, rigid and straight processions are formed which connect the body and distant areas. The place where the brush stays may be a glass window that creates an illusion of perspective between the subject and the object, or it may be a curtain that divides the closer and further parts. For a long time, painters allowed their physical bodies and distant areas to connect through the usage of the brush.

But what about the world where the brush disappeared, as in Kim Yong Moon’s paintings? Perspective disappears, distance disappears, and the boundary between this side of the body and the other distant world disappears; this side becomes the other side. This surely is the moment in which the rigid procession made by the brush collapses and the body tries to penetrate into the canvas. The penetration speed is very fast. It must be fast. This is because Kim Yong Moon’s work is based on the dismantling of the stacked layers through the quick usage of the fingers, rather than stacking layers on top of each other through the usage of brushes.

To do this, he needs to quickly push the surface while the paint is wet and have his fingers penetrate the paint towards the bottom. The finger penetrates and pushes out the acrylic paint as much as possible, creating various forms of waterways. Wide or narrow, fast or slow.

The fragile surface of the canvas tries to accept the intrusion of the fingers on one hand and resists on the other. Neither approval nor disapproval, the canvas shows an in-between facial expression that is hard to understand. The face is wet and soft. Unlike vision, tactile senses contain more unknown elements. The mysterious conversation of the fingers and paint continues on. And it leads to other expressions and unpredictable conversations. His paintings feel wet. The canvas is like in a liquid state and is constantly in motion not allowing our eyes to stay focused on one point.

His paintings have characteristics that are far from paintings drawn by brushes with rigid lines. Rather, Kim Yong Moon’s paintings include the delicate tactile touch of the fingers that enter the darkness beneath the layers of paint to produce chaotic liveliness. This is the essence of artwork that he pursues. His Macsabal also embodies this essence.
